New meters for our district heating customers
Vaasan Sähkö will replace the energy meters of its district heating customers in 2025–2028. On this page, you can read what you as a district heating customer should know about the meter replacement.
New technology ensures the quality of consumption data
“The district heating meters of Vaasan Sähkö’s district heating customers will be replaced in 2025–2028. In the first phase of the project in 2025, we will replace a total of 1,400 district heating meters,” says Project Manager Juha-Matti Karvala.
Why are the meters being replaced?
The remote reading function of the current energy meters works mainly with 2G modems. Technically, the meters will reach the end of their lifecycle when the 2G network will be shut down in Finland in the next few years. In other words, the meters will be replaced so that they will function also in the future.
The new energy meters are equipped with technology that no longer requires a separate remote reading function.
Our installation partner Elvera is responsible for the installation of the new meters.

District heating meters generally have a replacement cycle of about 10 years. Replacing meters is part of Vaasan Sähkö’s continuous work also outside of this project. This means that some of our district heating customers already have a new district heating meter and will therefore not receive a new meter during this project.
When will my district heating meter be replaced?
Our partner Elvera, who is responsible for the installation of the meters, will contact our customers when the meter replacement is approaching. They will suggest an installation time that you can either accept or reject. If the suggested time is not suitable for you, you can suggest a new time for the installation.
Should I be at home when the new meter is installed?
In detached and semi-detached houses, the customer must be at home at least to ensure that the installer has access to the technical room where the district heating meter is located.
Do I need to prepare for the meter replacement?
For the installation work to go as smoothly as possible, we ask you to remove any extra objects from the room where the district heating meter is located. This will create good working conditions for the installer.
How long does the installation take?
The meter replacement is estimated to take about 2 hours and it will cause a 30–60-minute break in the heat distribution.
Will the new district heating meter cost me?
The new district heating meter or its installation is free of charge to our customers.
Does my meter have to be replaced?
The district heating meter will have to be replaced, as the current meters will not function anymore when the 2G network, through which the remote reading of current meters works, will be shut down in Finland in the next few years. The district heating meter will be replaced with a new one so it will function also in the future.
Why is my meter being replaced?
The technology of the current remote reading feature will reach the end of its service life when the 2G network is shut down in Finland in the next few years, and remote reading of consumption data would no longer be possible with the current meters. The new energy meters are equipped with technology that no longer requires a separate remote reading feature.
