4 good reasons to choose Vaasan Sähkö

How to choose the best electricity contract for you

Here we explain more about our electricity contracts and help you choose the most suitable option for your household.

Choosing an electricity contract has a big impact on your household’s carbon footprint.

Should you choose a fixed-term or open-ended contract?

You can sign up for electricity either for a fixed term or with an open-ended contract. While pricing may vary between the two, over time, they typically offer comparable value.

Open-ended contract

An open-ended contract is ideal if you prefer flexibility or need a long-term solution for your electricity needs. It can be terminated at any time with a 14-day notice. The price of electricity can fluctuate over time, reflecting changes in market prices. We always notify you of price adjustments well in advance.

Our Wind Electricity and Basic Electricity options are open-ended contracts.

Fixed-term contract

A fixed-term contract locks in your electricity price for the duration of the agreement. It is a great option if you value price stability and want to avoid market price fluctuations.

Fixed-term contracts remain in effect until the end of the agreed period, with exceptions for moving, when they can be terminated earlier.

Fixed is our fixed-term contract option.

Homeowner – make the most of Vaasan Sähkö’s mobile app

Our customers get access to a mobile app that can be downloaded to their phone and an online service, making it easy to track the electricity consumption.

This is especially useful if you use a lot of electricity at home, for example, due to electric heating. In the app, you can:

  • See the size of your electricity bill for the current billing period.
  • How consumption choices, such as reducing electric heating or using the sauna, affect electricity usage, even with hourly precision. This concrete data encourages smarter energy use, helping you save money.
  • Compare your consumption to past periods, such as last year or last month. This provides interesting insights, especially for electric heating users, on how weather affects your electricity bill.
  • Mark new electrical appliances and track how replacing, for example, an old freezer, impacts electricity consumption.

How to make an electricity contract quickly

You can make an electricity contract for your home online 24/7 – it only takes a few minutes and is easy!

Log in to the service using your online banking credentials. You will be asked for basic information such as your name and the address where you want the electricity contract to apply.

In case of moving, make the electricity contract well in advance, preferably two weeks before moving. This ensures that electricity will be connected by the desired date. If you need a quick connection, your local electricity distribution company may charge a quick connection fee.

If you are in a hurry to get electricity connected, call our customer service, and we can help you get it done quickly for your home.

What makes up the electricity bill for a detached house?

The total amount of the electricity bill consists of the price of electricity, electricity distribution, as well as electricity tax and value-added tax.

If you live in the Vaasan Sähköverkko distribution area, you will receive one bill that includes all three components. If you live elsewhere in Finland, we will bill you only for the price of electricity, including the energy price (€/kWh) and the basic fee (€/kWh).

The local distribution company will charge you for the distribution fee. However, this does not affect the final amount of the electricity bill: you can order electricity from us with confidence anywhere in Finland.

Tips for a Lower Electricity Bill

  • Always compare electricity contracts when you move, when your fixed-term contract ends, or simply every couple of years. This ensures you’re paying a fair price for electricity.
  • Reduce your electric heating by one degree, and you can cut your electricity bill by 5%. Your living comfort won’t suffer from a slight drop in room temperature.
  • Reduce energy consumption by 30%: heat the hot water to (no less than) 55 degrees instead of 80.
  • Sauna efficiently: heat the stove to an energy-efficient 70–80 degrees. Turn off the stove after use. The sauna will dry using the residual heat.

Frequently Asked Questions about Home Electricity Contracts

Does my electricity consumption affect the offer I get?

Not directly. However, the size of your consumption does influence the selection of the best electricity offer for you:

  • The more electricity you consume, the more important it is to focus on the energy price (c/kWh).
  • If your consumption is low, it’s wise to choose an offer with a low monthly base fee (less than five euros per month).
  • If your consumption is small or you can easily shift it to different times, you might also consider the Exchange Electricity option.

How do I select the metering method?

The metering method indicates how the electricity is metered at your address. If you do not know the metering method at your address, you can find tips on how you select the right metering method here.

Can I change my electricity supplier during a fixed-term contract?

No. You must wait until the end of the fixed-term contract before switching to us.

The exception is in the case of moving house: if you’re moving, you can request the electricity vendor to terminate the fixed-term contract early. This way, you are free to sign a new contract with us for your new home.

How often will I receive an electricity bill?

You can decide how often you want to be invoiced.

  • At least 6 bills per year.
  • No more than 12 bills per year.
Do I need to cancel my old electricity contract?

When you sign an electricity contract with us, we can handle the cancellation of your old contract on your behalf. You don’t need to worry about the cancellation. Please remember that the notice period is 14 days, and your new contract will only take effect after that.
