More information on electricity contracts and ordering
If you are already a Vaasan Sähkö customer, you can check your contract price and validity period in our app.
You can make a contract for any location in mainland Finland.
Our prices are based on two metering methods: general electricity and night-rate electricity. Make an electricity contract based on the metering method at your address. You can read more about choosing a metering method here.
If you are changing electricity vendor, we will terminate your existing contract for you. When you are changing from another electricity vendor to Vaasan Sähkö, our contract cannot begin until two weeks after you conclude the contract with us. If you have a fixed-term contract with the other company, we advise you to make a new contract at least 15 days before it expires, so that our contract can start right away after the previous one expires.
If you are moving, you should conclude the contract with us preferably two business days before the move in order to have electricity on the day you move in.
When you are moving, we will also take care of the electricity transmission contract with your local distribution company. The distribution contract is based on the metering method used at your address. If you want to change the metering method, contact your local distribution company.
We are happy to buy any surplus electricity you have generated; just mention the micro-generation under the additional information section as you make your contract.
We charge for your electricity afterwards based on actual consumption. Unless otherwise agreed, we will send you a paper bill, but we encourage you to change it to, for example, an e-invoicing agreement with your bank.

Making an electricity contract – easy instructions
Making a new electricity contract is very easy on our website 24/7. It only takes a few minutes!

The metering method at your address is the only tricky question when you make an electricity contract. The metering method refers to the time frames the consumption metering is based on at your property. The options are general electricity and night-rate electricity. Choosing an electricity contract – four things to consider
You should compare electricity contracts before making up your mind. When selecting a new contract, you should compare not only the electricity price but also how it was generated and what type of contract it is.
1. Price is the primary concern for most when choosing a contract. Remember to include in the comparison both the energy charge (cents/kWh) based on consumption and the basic charge paid monthly.
2. The contract type refers to either a fixed-term contract or one that is valid until further notice. Your choice depends on whether you want stability or freedom.
Influencer, Basic Electricity and Wind Power are open-ended contracts. They would be your choice if you do not want to follow electricity prices. Exchange Electricity is also valid until further notice, and you benefit the most if you can time your consumption for the cheaper hours. As the contracts are valid until further notice, you can look for better deals and change your electricity contract as often as you like.
3. Choose a production method of your preference. All the electricity we sell is produced without emissions.
Choosing renewable energy is a great way of decreasing your household’s carbon footprint.
4. Customer experience should also be a consideration when choosing an electricity vendor. After all, everyone wants things to run smoothly!
Vaasan Sähkö is committed to friendly customer service. We’ll help you find just the right contract.

Electricity contract online

Which is the best type of contract for you: fixed-term or open-ended?
The question you should ask yourself is which you value more: freedom or stability?
An open-ended contract provides the greatest freedom. It does not bind you in any way. If you want to try another contract or want to change for any other reason, you can do so with two weeks’ notice. On the other hand, this type of contract does not need to be renewed or changed after a certain period.
This is your choice if you do not want to commit yourself to a single alternative for a longer period, or if you want to keep looking for cheaper options. Keep in mind, however, that there is a risk that prices may go up. If you choose Exchange Electricity, you can save on your electricity bill by timing your consumption to periods when the prices are lower.
A fixed-term contract is usually made for 6, 12 or 24 months, during which you cannot terminate or change your contract. However, the price is fixed for that period, so you will enjoy a steady rate even if the electricity market fluctuates during the contract period.
A fixed-term contract is the right choice for you if you value predictability and want to minimize risks. With a fixed-term contract, you do not have to worry about unexpected increases in costs. Your electricity bill will be higher only when you consume more.

Electricity price – what goes into it
The price of your full electricity bill consists of three parts: the price of electrical energy, which includes both the energy charge (cents/kWh) and the fixed, monthly basic charge, electricity distribution, and electricity tax and value-added tax.
![](https://www.vaasansahko.fi/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/sahkon-hinta-eng-e1718351312654.png)
The energy charge is the part of your electricity bill that you can compare between different vendors and buy from whichever company you wish. The electricity distribution price is determined by the local distribution company, and you cannot change this.
Some distribution companies belong to a group that also sells electricity. If you get the distribution and the electricity from the same group, you will only receive one bill. However, if you buy your electricity from elsewhere, you get a separate bill for the distribution service and the energy consumed.
Nevertheless, this has no effect on the overall sum of your electricity bill. In other words: you can buy your electricity from any vendor anywhere in Finland. This will not affect your distribution price.

Questions about electricity contracts
Can I change my electricity supplier during a fixed-term contract?
No. You must wait until the end of the fixed-term contract before switching to us.
The exception is in the case of moving house: if you’re moving, you can request the electricity vendor to terminate the fixed-term contract early. This way, you are free to sign a new contract with us for your new home.
Where can I see the necessary information for making an electricity contract?
If you enter into an electricity contract online, you will need to identify yourself via your bank identification. By phone, you will be identified by your social security number.
For an electricity contract, the electricity company needs 1 ) your name 2) social security number 3) new home address and 4) date when you would like the electricity to be connected. The date can be changed afterwards.

What billing practices does Vaasan Sähkö have?
If you live in the Vaasan Sähköverkko distribution area
- we will send you one bill, charging your for both the electricity consumed and the electricity distribution.
If you live elsewhere in Finland
- you will only receive an electricity bill from us as an electricity customer. The local distribution company will charge you separately for the electricity distribution.
We do not charge an additional fee for a paper invoice, but we do recommend electronic billing for our customers.
What are the available payment methods?
We recommend e-invoicing to all our customers.
We deliver bills electronically as e-invoices and email bills to the Kivra and OmaPosti services. Your e-invoice will arrive in your online bank, whereas Kivra and OmaPosti are electronic mailboxes where you can also easily pay your bill. The email bill will arrive as an email.
For business customers, we recommend e-invoicing.
However, if you prefer not to get your invoice electronically, we can send you a paper bill by mail or you can make a direct debit agreement with your bank.
With direct debit, you can pay your bills without online banking. If you choose direct debit, we will send the invoicing details by mail well before the due date, and simultaneously send the payment details directly to your bank. With a direct debit contract, you authorize the bank to pay the bill on your behalf. The bank will pay your bill automatically from your account on the due date.
Please note that it is no longer possible to pay your invoice on site at our customer service.
How do I know what type of electricity contract I have?
You will find the name of your electricity contract on your invoice. As a Vaasan Sähkö customer, you can also easily review your contract in the Vaasan Sähkö mobile app. Just download it in your app store. You can also contact our customer service for more information.
What is the difference between a fixed-term and an indefinite-term electricity contract?
An indefinite-term contract
- is valid indefinitely, and can be terminated at any time with a two-week notice period.
- has a variable price during the contract period.
- is suitable for those who value ease and the freedom to change their mind.
A fixed-term contract
- is valid for a fixed term, typically either 12 or 24 months.
- has a fixed price for the specified period, so the electricity bill varies only based on the actual consumption.
- is suitable for those who value predictability.
What happens when a fixed-term contract ends?
No worries! We will make you an offer for a new contract, well in advance before the end of your contract period. If you do not wish to extend the agreement with a new fixed-term contract, you can either choose any other contract or let the contract continue as a continuous agreement. In that case the price will be the one we are announcing at our website for the time being and the contract will have a mutual notice period of two weeks.
